Cautious optimism on extension of Iran nuclear talks
Vienna (AsiaNews / Agencies) - The Iranian nuclear negotiations between Tehran and the 5 + 1 (the members of the Security Council: the United States, Russia, China, Britain and France, plus Germany) that were supposed to conclude yesterday have been extended to July 7.
The decision to extend the negotiations is commented on in cautiously optimistic tones by all parties involved, even though there are different emphases.
White House spokesman Marie Harf, said that the goal is to reach a long-term solution, the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, after a meeting with US Secretary of State John Kerry, has argued that a final deal is "within reach". According to Lavrov, "the situation in the talks is proceeding in a positive direction", what remains are "procedural rather than technical issues."
For his part, the Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, returning to Vienna, said: "I'm here to get a final agreement, and I think we can get there." "The talks - he added - have arrived at a very sensitive stage", but "the other side knows that a good agreement cannot be reached without accepting Iran's rights."
Tehran also issued a statement from the Chief of Staff of the President, Mohammad Nahavandian, quoted by the official IRNA, according to whom "Although the nuclear negotiations have not ended, but it is sufficient reason that we should be optimistic about the future of talks because the negotiating sides have resorted to logic and joint objectives instead of exerting their one-sided stances". " In our view - he added - this issue was achieving the already available results because Iran has announced many times before that it had not sought military objectives in its nuclear program and it will not do so, but in the meantime it should follow up the right of nuclear advancement like other fields and the acknowledgement of the other side to this issue will pave the way for striking agreement in a serious manner.
