Bangladesh , Catholics offer aid to victims of Typhoon Haiyan

- Catholics in Bangladesh are launching a fundraising campaign to help the
victims of Typhoon Haiyan , which has caused more than 5,600 deaths in the
Philippines. The initiative is the
idea of Msgr. Patrick
D' Rozario , Archbishop of Dhaka and President of the Bishops' Conference of
Bangladesh , who invited " all the parishes , educational institutions ,
religious congregations , organizations , and the faithful in the country to
offer every possible help to the Filipino people ."
On
December 1st, he added, "we will pray for the victims and their families.
On the same day we will collect money for them, and deliver it to the Bishops'
Conference of the Philippines ."
The
typhoon
Haiyan made landfall on the Asian nation on November 8 last. The
central part of the Philippine archipelago was the hardest hit . According
to the latest estimates - still provisional - of the National Disaster Risk
Reduction and Management Council ( NDRRMC ) , there were 5,613 victims, while
1,602 people are still missing . In
Tacloban alone- the area most devastated by the cataclysm - there were 3,310 victims.
The
injured number 18,557 with at least 2 million families (10 million people) scattered
throughout 10,716 villages suffering serious damage to their homes and
livelihoods.
