Auxiliary of Seoul: youth, the basis of faith. But do not overdo it with activism
Seoul (AsiaNews)
- The Christian faith "is based on the contribution of young people, but
they must be careful not to fall into a common trap: that of activism. You have
to think about our beliefs and just get sucked into activities, as good as they
are. Only then will balances grow in your love of God", said Msgr. Peter Chung
Soon-taek, Auxiliary Bishop of Seoul, to about 100 young people gathered at the
Donggyodong Center for the annual training course in youth ministry.
The program, organized by the Archdiocese Youth Commission, aims to train young
Catholics and to help them contribute to better the life of their parishes. The
course focused on strategies and collaboration with pastors as well as new
instruments in evangelization. This year's theme was "You will
grieve, but your grief will turn to joy." For the first time, a bishop has directed the
meeting.
Msgr. Chung immediately wanted to clarify "a certain misunderstanding. The
real stars of the youth ministry are not the priests in charge, but you young
people. Therefore it is up to you to deepen your faith, so as to better serve
your community. We must be careful not to indulge too much into activism at the
expense of religious practice and reflection. "
During the debate, in the form of questions and answers, the prelate clarified
also a very important aspect for young Koreans: how to find a life partner.
"It is not enough - he laughed - to pray for a husband or a wife. But
above all, we should not judge another person only through common standards
such as physical appearance, career or salary. We have to look through the eyes
of God at others and continue to pray that the Lord will lead you to the right
person. "
