Since the start of the year Hanoi looked into 8,600 cases of corruption

Reports to National Assembly say more than US$ 180 million were confiscated. Only 441 cases of corruption were uncovered and 406 criminally investigated.

Hanoi (AsiaNews) – The Standing Committee of Vietnam’s National Assembly heard yesterday several reports indicating that in the first nine months of this year, inspectors looked into more than 8,600 cases of corruption, confiscating US$ 180.64 million.

In publishing the news state-run Vietnam News Agency said that these reports were part of a broader government strategy to fight corruption and waste.

Deputy Inspector General Lê Tiến Hảo said that between October 1, 2006, and August 31, 2007, 441 corruption cases had been discovered with criminal investigations getting underway in 406 cases.

National Assembly Chairman Nguyễn Phú Trọng recommended the government draw up specific measures to make the fight against corruption more efficient.
