Uzbekistan wants to make Karash a world sport
President Mirziyoyev has signed a decree tasking embassies with promoting abroad the local version of wrestling, practiced since antiquity. Heavily allocated funding for international competitions, with the dream of one day getting to see it recognized among the Olympic disciplines.
Tashkent (AsiaNews) - Uzbekistan plans to spread to the world the national sport of Kurash wrestling, a kind of wrestling practiced since ancient times, where competitors wear a green jacket and a blue jacket, respectively, with the aim of throwing the other to the ground.
If the opponent is thrown backward, victory is declared, while if the opponent is thrown to one side, points are awarded. The two competitors are not allowed to grasp the opponent's pants, but may remain attached to the contender's body.
The International Kurash Institute, based precisely in Uzbekistan, will increase funding to encourage the “export” of technicians, coaches and judges of the specialty to all foreign states.
Uzbekistan's embassies to the various states will participate in this effort to popularize the national sport, and informative reports will be submitted every six months to the Olij Mažilis, the Senate in Tashkent. President Šavkat Mirziyoyev himself signed a decree for the dissemination of Kurash to the world.
In the document, additional tasks are assigned to the Institute, not only to prepare world-class personnel of the discipline, but also to establish a system of continuous retraining and elevation of skills. Thus, scientific research on Kurash will be conducted, preparing handouts and materials for in-depth study of methodologies and practical-scientific applications.
“New formulas” for holding competitions will then have to be imagined, which will help the knowledge and appreciation of Kurash in the various regions of the world by opening appropriate representations with qualified personnel in the various states. Kurash must become a sport of “international value,” to the point of being included in the Olympic disciplines, without being confined to “national traditions.”
Each Uzbek embassy abroad will appoint its own “Kurash representative,” who will act in coordination with the proposals of the International Institute and the Association of Members of the sport.
The Uzbek Federation will have the right to allocate the necessary sums to finance the various initiatives, taking into account the available means. A cash award system will also be applied to the winners of the various levels of youth and adult competitions, and also their coaches, with funds from the state budget for the World Championships and Asian Games.
From 2026, the funding of the Kurash International Institute will be transferred to the republican budget, while so far it is supported by the Khokimjat (Municipality) of Tashkent, providing for a sum of 4.5 billion sum (about 335 thousand euros).
Additional support of at least 1.5 billion sum is planned based on the money allocated to the Ministry of Sports in the 2025 development programs.
As the president himself said, “Kurash allows for the release of human tensions and aggression in a celebration of energy and peace, which is so necessary for the whole world today,” and Uzbekistan intends to offer its experience and share its traditions for these purposes.
