Taslima Nasreen: ‘Surrogacy is possible because there are poor women’
The Bangladeshi writer takes a stand against the womb-for-rent practice two days after Bollywood star Priyanka Chopra and her partner announced the birth of their child via surrogacy.
New Delhi (AsiaNews) – “Surrogacy is possible because there are poor women. Rich people always want the existence of poverty in the society for their own interests,” tweeted Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen.
Known around the world for her positions in favour of women's rights and against all forms of religious extremism, Nasreen waded into the controversy surrounding surrogate motherhood, a front-page issue now in India, after Pryanka Chopra, one of Bollywood's best-known actresses, and her partner, announced that she and her partner Nick Jonas had a child via surrogacy.
The coincidence did not go unnoticed, sparking quite a few reactions among Indian Twitter users, forcing Nasreen to clarify her view. In another tweet, she said that her comment about surrogacy had “Nothing to do with Priyanka-Nick. I love the couple.”
In the original tweet, she wrote: "How do those mothers feel when they get their readymade babies through surrogacy? Do they have the same feelings for the babies like the mothers who give birth to the babies?”
Alternatively, she noted: “If you badly need to raise a child, adopt a homeless one. Children must inherit your traits – It is just a selfish narcissistic ego.”
