Sana'a: like the Taliban and the Islamic State, Houthis launch 'campaign' against films and music

Today's news: China’s economic losses from natural disasters in July reach US$ 7.74 billion. Since the February 2021 coup, the ruling junta has destroyed more than 16,500 homes in major cities. South Koreans are increasingly dissatisfied with their lives. The Saudi Embassy in Lebanon urges Saudis to leave the country. India's Supreme Court suspends the conviction of opposition leader Rahul Gandhi. Kyrgyzstan wants to build hydropower plants on the Naryn River.

YEMEN

Like the Taliban in Afghanistan and the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq, pro-Iranian Houthi rebels have launched a campaign against movies, TV series and music in Sana'a, the capital of Yemen, which is under their control. The Islamist militants have closed 14 stores that sell DVDs and CDs, part of a restrictive policy and "soft war" pursued by leader Abdul-Malik al-Houthi. This has sparked protests by city residents.

CHINA

Direct economic losses from natural disasters reached 41.18 billion yuan (US$ 7.74 billion) in July, more than the total for the six months of the year (January-June). Two powerful typhoons, repeated floods and other extreme events have affected more than seven million people. The capital Beijing has also seen its worst rains in 140 years. More is expected in August.

MYANMAR

Since the February 2021 coup, Myanmar’s military junta has destroyed more than 16,500 houses and buildings in large cities, 12,000 in Yangon alone, but the figure could be higher. Forcibly displaced, residents have had to find rental accommodations or return to their villages of origin. The authorities have often used the pretext that residents were squatters, claiming that the land belonged to the state.

SOUTH KOREA

South Koreans are generally dissatisfied with their lives. Happiness is essential for good health and well-being and affects mortality, especially among seniors. According to a study by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA), the average happiness index among adults stands at 6.68 points out of 10. Communication, in addition to health, plays a major role.

SAUDI ARABIA – LEBANON

The Saudi embassy in Lebanon is urging Saudis to leave the country or at least avoid areas affected by armed conflicts. It has not provided any details about the latter. Things have turned for the worse in Lebanon, which has been in an institutional crisis for a long time, following the recent outbreak of violence in the Palestinian refugee camp of Ain el-Hilweh, in which at least 13 people have died in factional fighting.

INDIA

The Supreme Court of India has suspended the conviction of opposition leader Rahul Gandhi. The Congress leader was sentenced to two years in March in connection with a 2019 defamation case involving Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which also led to his exclusion from Parliament. Today's ruling allows him to take up his parliamentary seat again and participate in next year's election.

RUSSIA – UKRAINE

On the ultra-radical Spas TV channel, the head of the Radonezh Orthodox Society, Yevgeny Nikiforov, who has been honoured several times with patriarchal awards, proposed the extermination of Ukrainians by incinerating them or using Solntsepek rockets. "In Ukraine,” he said, “the neo-Nazi pagan disease is so widespread that it cannot be solved with persuasion or negotiations; burning them is an act of Christian charity.”

KYRGHYZSTAN - CHINA

To tackle energy shortages, Kyrgyzstan plans to build hydropower plants on the Naryn River. To this end, the country’s authorities have signed a memorandum of understanding with a consortium of Chinese companies tasked with their construction. This has sparked debates over the country’s dependence on China.
