Qinghai-Tibet, death of animals due to the huge snowfalls

At least 21,000 head of cattle died and another 68,800 could die because "they can hardly find food". 98% of the residents of the autonomous Tibetan prefecture of Yushu are Tibetans who depend on raising livestock, their only source of income.

Beijing (AsiaNews / Caixin) - The heavy snowfalls of these weeks in the Tibetan region of Qinghai, are causing the death of animals and endangering the life of the population, which is based on breeding.

In an internal report by the Ministry of Emergency on the prefecture of Yushu, it is stated that until yesterday at 17, there were at least 12.931 family groups in difficulty, about 58.289 people - 14% of the local population. At least 21 thousand animals have died and another 68,800 could die because "they can hardly find food".

98% of the residents of the autonomous Tibetan prefecture of Yushu are Tibetans who depend on raising livestock, their only source of income.

The emergency ministry has activated a disaster aid program, allocating 65 million yuan (about 8.52 million euros).
