Mgr Rozario tells Bangladesh’s Catholic physicians to care for patients’ spiritual needs
Rajshahi (AsiaNews) - "As doctors, nurses and health care workers, you do not have to treat patients only from the physical point of view. You must also take care of their spirit,” said Mgr Gervas Rozario at a three-day workshop organised by Caritas Bangladesh on the theme ‘Update care and medical education’.
The prelate, who is the bishop of Rajshahi, spoke to Catholic physicians during seminar last week’s seminar, which was held at the headquarters of Caritas Rajshahi, in northern Bangladesh.
"Many patients come to our clinics to receive medical treatment,” said Mgr Gervas, who was just elected president of Caritas Bangladesh, “but in some facilities the number is comparatively less, because of greater sincerity and greater performance by doctors, nurses and health care workers.”
"You have to treat patients with sincerity and provide the best possible treatment,” the prelate told the health care officials. “You must also upgrade your expertise in your profession,” he added. What is more, “Caring for the soul is the most important thing in your work."
"The bishop encouraged us to upgrade our knowledge,” a participant told AsiaNews. “He invited us to be even more involved in our work and to take care of the spiritual needs of our patients."
"I took part in this seminar to understand how I can competently treat skin disorders,” said another.
"We want to implement the teachings of the Catholic Church through our medical services. This way, we can train Catholic health workers,” said Dr Edwar Pallab Rozario, a senior member of Caritas Bangladesh, as he described the seminar’s goals.
The Catholic Church runs about 70 health facilities (including seven hospitals) in Bangladesh, and every year, training seminars are offered to health workers.
More than a hundred doctors and more than a thousand nurses are Catholic.
