Indian bishops unveil schoolbooks for ‘quality education’

Some 115 schoolbooks and other textbooks are available to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE). The tomes were officially unveiled by the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (Latin rite). For Cardinal Ferrão, “Education is a primary mission of the Church in India.”

Bangalore (AsiaNews) – Renewing the commitment of the local Church to education, the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI), Latin rite, unveiled a series of 115 schoolbooks, as well as electives, non-core curriculum textbooks for the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE).

The event was held yesterday at the St John's National Academy of Health Sciences, in Bengaluru (Bangalore), capital of the southern state of Karnataka.

Card Filipe Neri Ferrão, archbishop of Goa and Damão and CCBI president, officially unveiled the schoolbooks in the presence of 40 bishops attending the CCBI Executive Committee meeting, along with educators, major superiors, CCBI Commission secretaries, and other dignitaries.

Some prominent Church officials addressed the meeting chaired by the cardinal, including Card Oswald Gracias, Archbishop of Bombay; Cardinal Anthony Poola, Archbishop of Hyderabad; Archbishop Peter Machado of Bangalore; and Archbishop Elias Gonsalves of Nagpur, this according to a note sent to AsiaNews signed by Rev Stephen Alathara, CCBI deputy secretary general.

“Education is a primary mission of the Church in India. With numerous schools across the country, we are committed to providing quality education to future generations,” said Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrão. “This new series of schoolbooks will further strengthen our education apostolate,” he added.

Card Gracias praised the initiative, congratulating those involved in the monumental task of publishing the series of schoolbooks for Catholic schools.

Archbishop Peter Machado stressed the Church’s responsibility in educating future citizens to uphold human and constitutional values. In this regard, the prelate referred to the CCBI's value education schoolbooks, launched in 2022, as an essential tool for this mission.

The publication of the series and textbooks was made possible thanks to the collaboration of Arclight Global, the CCBI publishing arm, also founded in 2022, marking a significant step forward in the Church's efforts to enhance educational resources in its schools in India.
