Hanoi, 'no agreement' between Trump and Kim

The two leaders canceled lunch and a signature ceremony. The White House: "The respective delegations look forward to meeting in the future". Kim and Trump discussed denuclearization and guided economics. The North Korean leader declares that he would not have come to Hanoi if he had not consented to the dismantling of the nuclear arsenal.

Hanoi (AsiaNews / Agencies) - Despite the "constructive" talks held in Hanoi, US President Donald J. Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un failed to reach an agreement: This is the announcement released this morning by the Washington authorities.

"At the moment, there is no agreement but the respective delegations are looking forward to meeting in the future," White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said in a statement. The official added that for two days Trump and Kim "had very good and constructive meetings". "The two leaders discussed various ways of advancing denuclearization and the concepts of guided economics," reads the document.

The first signs of a stop in the negotiations emerged shortly after midday, when the White House reported to the media that a scheduled working lunch had been canceled and that Trump would return to his hotel for a press conference two hours later.

Both sides had planned a "joint signing ceremony" at 14.05, while Trump was supposed to hold a press conference at 15.50 at the JW Marriott Hotel, where he is staying. There were signs of a small disagreement among the leaders when they spoke briefly to the media at the beginning of the day and during their dinner on Wednesday.

"We had a good discussion last night at dinner and the pre-dinner was very good, we had a lot of good ideas ... I think [North Korea] will be an economic power," said Trump during the individual meeting on Thursday.

Kim also said: "We have made a lot of efforts so far and we thought it was time to come to Hanoi to sit down and have this wonderful dialogue ... I assure you that I will do my best to get a good result today." The North Korean leader also added at the beginning of the extended meeting that he would not have come to Hanoi if he had not consented to denuclearization.
