Bangkok crackdowns on pets: only one per family
The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) approves a new bylaw that should enter into force within a year. The goal is to limit the number of pets per household according to size and type of the house and address the issue of aggressive animal behaviour.
Bangkok (AsiaNews) – The City of Bangkok is planning to implement new regulations to control stray animals and abandoned pets before the year is out. The bylaw will limit the number of pets an owner can have depending on the type and size of their dwelling.
The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) approved the pet control bylaw in 2024, which is expected to come into effect before the end of the year.
The new policy will see municipal officials organise training and information seminars for owners of cats and dogs as well as other domestic animals. These events will provide documentation on how to register, and obtain vaccination certificates and mandatory microchip documents.
The documents will be available by mid-year, and owners must have their pets microchipped before registration.
The goal of the new system is to prevent bad smell, noise pollution and unhealthy environments for pets living in cramped conditions, as well as make Bangkok safer for pedestrians.
The bylaw stipulates that only one pet will be allowed for a living surface of 20 square metres to 80 square metres in a condo or an apartment. In a detached house, up to three pets are allowed in a space ranging between 20 and 200 square metres.
Finally, the BMA notes that the bylaw was designed to keep the population of domestic animals under control, solving the problems caused by stray animals.
The new regulation is also designed to control animal behaviour, in particular dogs. If one shows aggressive attitudes or bites people, they must be muzzled and on a short leash every time they are in public.
Those who want a pair of dogs or cats for breeding will be required to ask permission from the BMA.
