Bangalore to build Asia’s first Science Gallery
Bangalore (AsiaNews) - The first gallery of Sciences in Asia will be built in Bangalore, India. Over the next four years, the capital of Karnataka will become the third city in the world - after Dublin and London - to host the prestigious institution, which will also be the largest in the world.
The state government has signed a memorandum of agreement with the company that administers the three galleries on November 13th. Chris Horn, president of the institute, said: "The decision to expand in Bangalore was natural, because the city is a world center for science and technology."
In fact, Bangalore is the fastest growing city in Asia and its population has reached 10 million. Over the past 10 years it has established itself for activities in the field of Information Techology (IT) and today provides services not only on India, but all over the world, and many foreigners choose to relocate here to start businesses and activities, or attend some of the leading international schools in the country.
Unlike the 'conventional' museums, the Science Gallery will not have a permanent collection, but host regular
exhibitions on various themes and activities. The aim is to promote collaboration between art and science,
to offer a new cultural prospective
to children and young people aged 15 to 25 years. Every
year, said Chris Horn, the
institute will present five different
exhibitions based around five themes. Scientists from the local universities and abroad will exhibit their projects and will host short practical lessons.
The collections will be exhibited in all
three galleries, to promote
cultural exchange between countries.
The first Science Gallery opened in Dublin (Ireland) in 2008. The
one in London (UK) will be opened in 2016, while the one in Bangalore will open its doors in 2018. According to the agreements, the
structure will be built in the Indian Institute
of Science (IISc).
