Army takes Damascus, battle for Aleppo rages
Damascus (AsiaNews / Agencies)
- As of yesterday evening, the Syrian army has entered the district Tadamon, previously
dominated by insurgents, taking control of the entire capital, even if here and
there , sporadic gun fire is still reported. Meanwhile there is constant armed
clashes in many areas of Aleppo,
the economic capital of the country.
According to activists, thousands of Syrian soldiers have manned control and searching the Tadamon neighbourhood house
by house. But there are also explosions in the neighbourhood of Dumar and in
the centre of the capital.
Overnight government troops bombed the areas of Aleppo patrolled by the rebels with artillery
and helicopter gunships.
Yesterday the UN General Assembly condemned the violence of the Syrian
government and especially the inaction of the UN Security Council. The
resolution, passed by 133 votes in favour, 12 against and 31 abstentions, was
presented by Saudi Arabia,
deeply involved in supporting the anti-Assad rebels.
Although there is no names, the resolution - which is not binding - criticises Russia and China as having blocked joint action
against the Assad government.
Vitaly Churkin, Russian ambassador to the UN, in turn criticized the resolution
as partisan and in support of the armed opposition.
The presentation of the resolution was decided after the resignation of Kofi Annan
from the post of UN envoy for the peace process in Syria.
