Anticipation in Damascus for Baath Congress conclusions

by Jihad Issa

Damascus (AsiaNews) – There is great anticipation in Damsacus for the conclusions of the Congress of the Al Baath Party, which "will change the face of Syria", as declared by party member Ali Jamalo to AsiaNews.

There is talk of laws to legalize political parties, for press freedom and for a reform of the economic system "capable of moving the country towards a market economy without excluding the social economic policy of the State", in the words of Minister Chehabane. Deliberations of the Baath Congress, which closes today, took place in Damascus under the chairmanship of Party Secretary-General and President of the Republic, Bachar El Assad; 1,235 delegates took part. The congress held in the aftermath of the withdrawal from Lebanon will, according to Jamalo, "adopt crucially important decisions which will open new doors".

More voices have been raised to call for the "necessity of protecting the regime, reiterating that the only national guarantee lies in unanimity around the figure of President Assad ". In this regard, the Foreign Affairs Minister, Farouk El Chareh, talked of an American plot which aims to destroy Syria. He sustained that specific circumstances conditioned members of the Security Council to issue resolution 1559, which prompted the government to withdraw its troops from Lebanon.

The Minister for Emigrants and spokesperson for congress members, Boussaina Chehbane, said that "when vice-president Abd El Halim Khaddam criticised Syria's foreign policy in Lebanon and in the US, he was not right because the international situation did not leave room for alternatives". Huseein Khalife admitted to AsiaNews that there is international pressure against Syria, indicating that the reform process is a national need. The congress of the El Baath Party should also propose a new law about the press which, according to minister Chehabane, will allow for private communication media to undertake activities without obstacles and impediments. It should also relax the state of emergency still valid in the country since it was declared in 1963.
