Dhaka, inaugurated the first Catholic university in Bangladesh
Dhaka (AsiaNews) - The first Catholic university of Bangladesh opened in Dhaka. Lessons at Notre Dame University Bangladesh (NDUB) began yesterday. Established by the Missionaries of the Holy Cross, it has 283 members and 24 teachers. At the moment, the subjects are english, economics, law, philosophy and business administration.
Last 4th December was held an orientation ceremony, which was attended by about 350 people. Guest of honor was the retired bishop of Dhaka, mgr. Paulinus Costa. "This university will teach you truth and wisdom," said the bishop addressing the students. "You'll have to learn to be committed in your professional as well as personal life."
Fr. Benjamin Costa, vice chancellor of the university, thanked the government and donors who contributed to the opening of NDUB. "As missionaries of the Holy Cross, we are committed to impart a quality-based education; to instill in our students a true sense of patriotism and love for the people and for the country. With this purpose in mind, the first year of study will be the same for all students, that only on the second year will begin to specialize."
The Notre Dame University Bangladesh has received the official approval of the government on 29th April 2013. "We are deeply grateful to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Dr. A. K. Azad Chowdhury [chairperson of the University Grants Commission - ndr] for this great gift. We envision this university developing in the same line as Notre Dame College, which has served the people of Bangladesh for 64 years" added fr. Costa.
In Bangladesh, Holy Cross missionaries are known and appreciated for their educational apostolate.
The first Notre Dame college was established in Dhaka in 1949 and today is considered one of the best in the country.
