Seoul invites Kim Jong-un to the South: A step for peace

South Korean president Moon Jae-in "ready to welcome" the North Korean dictator at the ASEAN summit to be held in Busan in late November. The visit, explains the democratic leader, "would give Pyongyang the possibility of developing cooperation plans with the nations of South-East Asia".

Seoul (AsiaNews) - South Korean President Moon Jae-in has invited the northern dictator to the Asean summit in late November to be held in Busan, the largest port city in South Korea. The decision, he explained, "should be taken at light of dialogue in the peace process on the Korean peninsula, including the dialogue between the North and the United States. We will continue to consult with the nations involved ".

North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un, has slowly become ambivalent toward the peace process in Korea over the past year. He has repeatedly met with US President Trump, who has even set foot in North Korea, and his southern counterpart. However, the North Korean military continued the launch of ballistic missiles in the seas surrounding the peninsula, a source of concern for both Seoul and Tokyo.

Moon is still optimistic: "Kim has personally and on various occasions confirmed his commitment towards a complete denuclearization. He stated that he prefers economic development over atomic development. Now we need concrete actions ".

The president of the South then praised ASEAN's effort to help boost Asian cooperation: "The fact that the two historic meetings between Washington and Pyongyang took place in Singapore and Hanoi demonstrates the enormous constructive role that ASEAN plays in the process of peace. The forces have not been spared to create always and in any case the opportunity for a dialogue ”.
