Pope: the economy is of service to the common good if it remains tied to ethics

The contradiction of a society that on the one hand, we see the prevalence of purely economic or financial criteria and activities aimed at consumption, and on the other hand , the growing inability to reconcile the just distribution of income with the improvement of development prospects.

Vatican City (AsiaNews) - "The economy renders a service to the common good if it remains  tied to ethics, which is a universal measure of authentic human good".  Pope Francis said this today in the greeting he addressed to the members of the "Guido Carli" Foundation and of the jury of the homonymous Award, received on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of it's Foundation.

"We are all aware”, he added, “of the fact that, among the contradictions of today's society, there is also this: on the one hand, we see the prevalence of purely economic or financial criteria and activities aimed at consumption, and on the other hand , the growing inability to reconcile the just distribution of income with the improvement of development prospects. It is important to reiterate that the economy provides a service to the common good if it remains linked to ethics, which is a universal measure of authentic human good".

The Pope then remembered the work of Guido Carli, "economist and statesman, whose figure is marked by a strong sense of duty and a persevering commitment for the good of the community", Francis underlined the social commitment of the Foundation, which "intends to promote solidarity  : this is a human value that, in the Christian perspective, fulfills the duty of evangelical charity ".
