Medan bomber’s wife arrested for planning attack in Bali

by Mathias Hariyadi

Rabbial Muslim Nasution was influenced by Dewi A, who indoctrinated her husband through internet material to carry out a suicide attack. She was also in contact with a detained terrorist. Together, they were planning a new attack. Evidence was found on the social media.

Jakarta (AsiaNews) – The wife of the Medan suicide bomber planned a terrorist attack on the island of Bali. She was even more radical than her husband and convinced him to seek "martyrdom" in the attack two days ago against police headquarters in the capital of North Sumatra province.

Six people were injured in the blast, including four police officers, a civilian and an employee. A few hours later, the security forces identified 24-year-old Rabbial Muslim Nasution as the person responsible for the attack.

During the search of the place where he lived (pictured) in the past month, Densus 88[*] agents- took into custody his wife, Dewi A.

Following the arrest, police spokesman Gen Dedi Prasetyo held a press conference at the police headquarters in Kelapa Dua, Depok (West Java).

Based on preliminary findings, the high-ranking official told reporters that the woman had joined the jihad before her husband. Rabbial Muslim Nasution came under her influence. She indoctrinated him using material from the Internet and convinced him to become a suicide bomber (pengantin).

Dewi A was “active on social media and she physically communicated with inmate I (a woman) who is serving at a correctional institution,” General Dedi said. Her visits were regular and the two planned an attack on Bali. The Densus 88 is still investigating their plot.

According to the police officer, “The investigation is still underway, into both Rabbial Muslim Nasution and his wife, Dewi A, as to whether they had a structured network or not,”

The evidence of Dewi A’s involvement was inferred from her social media activity. She frequently posted comments and spread extremist content.

Meanwhile, police in Cilegon (Banten province) on Wednesday arrested a high-profile employee in the state-owned steel company Krakatau Steel. According to unconfirmed reports, he is suspected of raising funds for an attack.

Between 9 and 14 November, the authorities also captured 12 suspected terrorists in various parts of the country: three in Banten province, one in Central Java, five to Riau, and one in Bekasi.

A man called Ahmad Fauzi, 42, was also arrested yesterday by police in Banyuwangi (East Java) at the wheel of a van. Agents found 100 detonators and some boxes with 25 kg of explosive material inside the vehicle. The material was destined for Bali via the Ketapang-Gilimanuk ferry.

At present, anti-terrorist police are trying to understand if there is a connection between the former and Dewi A’s plan and her accomplice.
