Lahore (AsiaNews) - It is called "Family Fellowship" and promotes solidarity among families. It is a program that airs on the Catholic TV channel launched by the Archdiocese of Lahore in 2009. Its director Jasber Ashiq tells AsiaNews that the purpose of the broadcast is to bring the community closer by sharing practical life experiences.

“We observed that married couples are gradually lacking mutual understanding. The basis of their clashes is usually flimsy; it may be a comment by an elderly parent or attitude of an indifferent sibling. We wanted to bring them back to Church through their television sets," he added.

The 46 year old has produced more than 100 episodes of "Family Fellowship" programs on Lahore Archdiocesan cable based channel since 2009. The different themes of the hour long program include impact of lying in families, tolerance, respect for life partner, education for children etc.

"Most of our guests are working couples with low morale. We also use social media to offer guidelines for a better family. Even the Muslim viewers appreciate this talk show," said Ashiq who hosts the weekly program along with his wife.

"Some of the invited couples develop deeper relations. A few married their children with those of another guest. Some lucky ones used these references in seeking jobs."

The shows recorded this week referred to the 9th World Meeting of Families scheduled from August 21 to August 26 in Dublin (Ireland). Pope Francis, who chose its overarching theme "The Gospel of the family, joy for the world", will join last two days of the meeting.

Founded by Capuchin Father Morris Jalal in 2009, Catholic TV broadcasts programs on catechism, family issues, youth, children, hymns, bible quiz, career counseling, biblical movies in Urdu (National language) as well as live homilies on social media. It is presently being viewed in more than 20,000 Christian houses in Lahore archdiocese and some villages of Punjab and Sindh province. This week, on the occasion of the World Meeting of Families taking place in Dublin, it is broadcasting insights on the event.

Msgr. Sebastian Shah Archbishop of Lahore is presently running a fundraising campaign to launch the channel on satellite. "Our families seriously need spiritual formation in today's era. They need guidance about selecting their life partner. My families are poor because their youth avoids hard work. This is increasing depression in the community," he said. "Matchmaking is another issue. Young Christian females are more educated than the boys. Resultantly the parents find it difficult to marry them.”
