Jerusalem capital: the anger and disillusionment of the Palestinians

Three days of protest and demonstrations against Trump's decision. In Gaza the protests started already before the announcement. Desperation among the Palestinians: "We have already lost everything".

Jerusalem (AsiaNews / Agencies) - All Palestinian factions have announced three "days of rage" and demonstrations throughout Palestine and beyond, in protest at the US President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. In Gaza, hundreds took to the streets to protest, already hours before the official declaration.

In the evening, while Israeli and American flags were projected on the ancient walls of the Old City, the lights of the Esplanade of the Mosques were extinguished. The same happened for the lights of the Christmas tree in Bethlehem. Protests exploded in the Jordanian capital, where many Palestinians live.

The President of the Palestinian National Authority states that US President Trump has abdicated his role as mediator for peace. The Islamic movement Hamas declared that Trump's decision "will open the gates of hell", calling it a "flagrant aggression" against the Palestinians, which encourages all out confrontation with the Israeli occupation to make the voice of the Palestinian’s heard.

But beyond anger, there is also much disillusionment. Some Palestinians interviewed by Haaretz bitterly comment that Trump's decision will not change anything. One of them said: "We will not really lose anything, because we have already lost everything". Adnan Reit, a Fatah activist in Jerusalem, stresses that this will not pass "in silence", because "there is a whole generation that has been waiting for a long time, and now their hopes have been destroyed and they have nothing else to lose".
