Elections in seven months, the deaths in Cairo cause the provisional government to move quickly

Protests continue demanding the return of Mohammed Morsi to the presidency. Violent shoot-outs in front of the barracks of the Presidential Guard. 51 deaths since Monday, July 8 push Adly Mansour, interim President, to advance the date of the election. Supporters of the deposed president announce a new massive rally for this afternoon.

Cairo (AsiaNews/agencies) - Elections within the first days of February. A press release issued by the interim President, Adly Mansour, on the evening of Monday, July 8, reported that within seven months, the country will return to the polls. The official date will be announced within the next few weeks, during which the members of the new parliament will launch a document to improve the constitution. varerrano

The announcement of the provisional head of state comes after the bloodiest day of the "post-Morsi" era. There were 51 victims of the clashes that occurred Monday, July 8 in front of the barracks of the Presidential Guard; at least 40 belong to the ranks of the Muslim Brotherhood. The protesters accuse the army of having opened fire on a peaceful sit-in at a time of prayer, while armed forces speak of "criminals in civilian clothing" who arrived with the intent to unsettle up the protest. This second version has been confirmed also by some Muslim Brotherhood demonstrators present yesterday at the scene of the unrest.

The Freedom and Justice Party, the political arm of the Islamist movement, is shouting for "a popular uprising against those who try to steal of revolution using tanks" and has launched an appeal to the international community to ensure that Egypt does not become the new Syria. The army warns that it will not allow the national stability to be compromised, but the deaths yesterday cast a pall of doubt on its actual ability to lead the country through a peaceful transition. Meanwhile, from the Muslim Brotherhood, comes the announcement of a new huge wave of protests in the afternoon today.
