Mumbai (AsiaNews) - This morning the Telangana police killed four men, alleged rapists of a 27-year-old veterinarian, who was found burned to death last week in Hyderabad.
The murder of the young woman, following a gang rape, sparked indignation and widespread protests on the part of the citizens, who demanded exemplary justice for the executioners. According to the reconstructions of the agents, the killing of the four would have happened accidentally on the site of the rape, where they had been conducted for the reconstruction of the facts.
Dr. Pascoal Carvalho, a Catholic doctor and a member of the Pontifical Academy for Life, comments to AsiaNews: "Inhuman and brutal rape and murder are a serious and evil crime. Justice must be done for this. But the killing of four men, whose faults have not yet been proven, is an equally serious fact ".
The four men killed this morning are: Mohammed (26), Jollu Shiva (20), Jollu Naveen (20) and Chintakunta Chennakeshavulu (20). They were arrested on November 29 on charges of kidnapping, raping and then killing the veterinarian by setting fire to her. The girl's body had been found under a flyover in Shadnagar the day before. The last her family had of her was the previous evening, when she had telephoned them to warn that she was stuck in the street with a flat tyre and that a truck driver had stopped to help her. Then talking to his sister, she revealed that she was afraid because the neighborhood was isolated and deserted.
In these hours many on social networks have praised the police for the death of the alleged murderers, including the victim's family. Dr. Carvalho recalls "the public protests following the brutal rape of Delhi, against other murders and cases of sexual violence against women. The shouted outbursts of those asking for the death penalty for rapists are reaching alarming levels”.
According to the Indian doctor, "the wrath of society is amplified even more by the slow pace of the judicial system and the endless delays of the police and investigative agencies".
Dr. Carvalho stresses that "the safety and dignity of women are of fundamental importance" and that "Pope Francis has spoken out against the death penalty. He maintains that the vision of the Church is "matured", that every life must be protected without exception and that capital punishment is a "grave violation of the right to life" that belongs to every person ".
If on the one hand, he says in conclusion, "it is true that societies and human communities are often forced to face very serious crimes that threaten the common good and the safety of people, on the other it is equally true that today there are other means to expiate the damages caused ”.
