It would be the first one on one meeting between the leaders of the two countries, since the Cold War. The invitation of the North Korean leader delivered by the Seoul delegation yesterday in Washington. Moon: historical landmark for peace.

Seoul (AsiaNews / Agencies) - Kim Jong-un has invited US President Donald Trump to meet in May, and promises: an end to missile and nuclear tests. This was announced by South Korean national security director, Chung Eui-yong, speaking to Washington journalists in the past few hours. The summit would be the first of the leaders of the two opposing countries since the Cold War.

Chung, together with the head of the secret services Suh Hoon, went to Washington to report the details of their visit to Pyongyang. The two officials met with the American president in the afternoon, along with other senior US officials.

The journey of the two South Korean senior officials to the North was possible in the context of détente initiated with the negotiations for the PyeongChang Winter Olympics. During their stay in the North, Kim Jong-un handed a message to the South Koreans for President Trump, whom he invited him to meet as soon as possible. The meeting will take place after a summit between the North Korean leader and South Korean president Moon Jae-in, in late April.

For his part, Moon applauds the announced summit, calling it a "historic milestone" for peace on the Korean peninsula. For weeks, Seoul has been trying to bring the historic American ally and the neighboring North to dialogue: "If President Trump and Chairman Kim meet after an inter-Korean summit, the complete denuclearization of the Korean peninsula will indeed be back on track."
